On April 11, the Omaha chapter of JuSTEMagine had the privilege of participating in Indian Hill Elementary School’s STEM Night, thanks to an invitation from a first-grade teacher. The event was a wonderful opportunity to engage young students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities, fostering curiosity and innovation.
The board members in attendance were Siri Doddapaneni (President), Keerthana Vinod (Director of Esports), Fruzsina Roka (Director of Legislative Advocacy), Reeya Chundury (Director of Events), Aubrey Nguyen (Director of Technology), Adrishya Kumar (Director of Art).
The JuSTEMagine team hosted an engaging and educational table where participants could build boats out of LEGOs. The activity was designed to teach the principles of the scientific method, engineering, and buoyancy. Once the LEGO boats were constructed, students tested their creations by placing them in a large tub of water to see if they would float.
The excitement didn't stop there! After confirming their boats could float, the young engineers were challenged to add pennies to their boats to test how many they could hold before sinking. This hands-on activity encouraged students to experiment, modify, and enhance their designs, promoting iterative learning and creative problem-solving. Some participants even added decorative touches like flags and flowers to their boats, showcasing their creativity. The most successful boat held an impressive 11 pennies before sinking. Reflecting on the event, President Siri Doddapaneni stated “Everyone there was super friendly, and I’m so pleased we got this opportunity to extend JuSTEMagine’s reach! We had an amazing turnout of students, and everyone enjoyed building their boats and getting competitive. Our board members staffing the table also did an amazing job.”
The event was not only a fun and interactive way for students to learn about STEM but also a fantastic opportunity for JuSTEMagine to connect with the community. The participation and enthusiasm from both students and board members made the night a memorable success. The Omaha chapter looks forward to future events and opportunities to inspire and educate young minds in the STEM fields.
