Is Art Created by Artificial Intelligence Real Art?

By: Shreyash Srivastava

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made major advances in recent years, particularly in the field of artistic production. This discovery poses an intriguing question: Is AI art truly art? To investigate this, we must analyze the fundamentals of creativity, authorship, and the changing role of technology in artistic expression.

Define Art and Creativity

Traditionally, art has been viewed as a manifestation of human creativity, distinguished by emotional depth, inventiveness, and a personal touch that represents the artist's goal and experiences. AI-generated art defies this concept by creating visually appealing works utilizing algorithms and massive datasets. These AI systems, such as DALL-E and Midjourney, can produce artworks that frequently blur the distinction between human and machine creation.

The Role of AI in Art Creation

AI's involvement in art creation is typically through machine learning models trained on large datasets of existing artworks. These models learn patterns and styles, allowing them to create new images that replicate a variety of artistic methods. The famous AI-created portrait "Edmond de Belamy," which sold for $432,500 at Christie's auction house, is an example of AI art's commercial and cultural effect.

Authorship and Authenticity

One of the main arguments in AI art is about authorship. If an AI develops an artwork, who is the genuine artist: the programmer who created it, the AI itself, or the dataset's original creators? This question challenges established notions of authorship and intellectual property, presenting ethical and legal questions about originality and ownership.

Emotional and Creative Depth

Critics believe that artificial intelligence lacks the emotional and creative depth human artists bring to their works. While AI may mimic styles and create visually appealing compositions, it lacks personal experience or emotional intent. Some argue that because AI works lack a "soul" or mind, they can never be called "real" art in the conventional sense.

AI as a tool for artists

Despite these issues, many artists see AI as a tool for improving their creative process. Using AI, artists can experiment with new styles, produce concepts, and push the limits of their creativity. Collaboration between human artists and AI tools can result in unique and remarkable creations that neither could accomplish alone.

Conclusion

The question of whether AI art is actual art is not easily answered. It questions our understanding of creativity, authorship, and emotional expression. As AI advances, it will surely play a larger role in the art world, sparking continuous disputes over its position in artistic expression. Finally, AI art represents a new frontier in the ever-changing environment of artistic creativity, challenging us to rethink what art can be in the era of technology.
